    JROTC History Timeline

    The U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) 

    • One of the largest character development and citizenship programs for youth in the world.

     

    • National Defense Act of 1916 established organized JROTC programs at public and private educational institutions.

     

    • In 1964, the Vitalization Act opened JROTC up to the other services replaced most of the active duty instructors with retirees.

     

    • JROTC salary is cost-shared between the U.S. Army and the school

     

    Congressionally mandated by Title 10 United States Code, Section 2031Each military service sponsoring a JROTC program is designed to “instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.” 

     

      Nixa High School JROTC 

    • Established in 1996 as part of an expansion initiative approved by the U.S. Congress

     

    • Highly regarded JROTC program throughout the Southwest Missouri area

     

    • Designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction program for the past 22 years
